What Is Alyssa’s Law in Virginia?

House Bill 592 was signed into law by Governor Abigail Spanberger in April 2026 and takes effect July 1, 2026. The law permits any Virginia school board to provide its public elementary and secondary school employees with a wearable panic alarm system — and gives schools formal statutory definitions of what those devices must do.

HB 592 Establishes:

School board authority to provide any public elementary or secondary school employee with a wearable panic alarm system.
Statutory definition of “wearable panic alarm system” — a device worn on the body, manually activated by the user.
Direct PSAP signal to the local 9-1-1 Public Safety Answering Point indicating a school security emergency requiring immediate response.
